(Fire Awareness)
Some common guidance taken from our “Fire” Training Courses:
- Common causes of workplace fire: Electrical equipment faults and poorly maintained, portable heaters, Cooking, Poor housekeeping, Hot working practices, Smoking, Arson.
- The fire triangle – Heat / Fuel / Oxygen.
- Methods of heat transfer, Conduction, Convection, Radiation.
- Fire protection includes: Fire alarm systems, Smoke detectors, Emergency lighting, Sprinkler systems, Fire extinguishers, Fire blankets, Hose reels.
- Fire passive control measures include: Compartmentation, fire resistant walls, ceilings, doors to restrict the spread of fire. Fire exits, escape routes and signage.
- There are different class types of fire ranging from class A-F all of which may be extinguished by different fire extinguishers.
- Fire extinguishers include: Water, Foam, CO2, Powder, Wet chemical.
- Using a fire extinguisher (PASS) Pull – Aim – Squeeze – Sweep. Beware of CO2 extinguisher horns as these can become very cold.
- (FSRA) Fire Safety Risk Assessment will include: Identify the fire hazards, Identify the people at risk, Evaluate, Record and Review.
- (FSO) The Regulatory Reform Fire Safety Order 2005 covers Responsible person, Employees duties, Regular checks, periodic checks and more.
- All employees will require a fire safety briefing.
- Fire drills are required to be carried out.
As December is the festive time of year when we all introduce more fire hazards such as lights, Christmas trees and decorations now is the time of year to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our staff and working environments.
