Managing Mobile Elevated Work Platform Operators
Some common guidance taken from our “MEWP Managers” Training Course:
- Health and Safety publications that cover the use and Management of Elevated Work Platforms include: LOLER (lifting operations and lifting equipment regulations) and PUWER (provision and use of work equipment regulations).
- People must be receive a Thorough Examination every 6 months.
- The Working at Height Regulations require the work to be planned and organised by a competent person.
- There are various types of MEWP’s which must be selected correctly for the work activity taking place.
- Fall protection such as Harnesses may be required dependent on the work activity and the risk assessment findings.
- Suspension Trauma and rescue plans would need to be considered and arranged prior to the work activity taking place.
- Emergency Auxiliary controls and procedures must be identified with a responsible person available to commence the emergency procedure.
- Wind speeds may need monitoring by the use of an Anemometer.
- There are set distances which must be maintained from High Voltage Lines such as 15m from steel towers and 9 meters from wooden poles.
- Pre-use / Pre-shift inspections are required to be completed and evidence recorded before commencing work on an MEWP.
- Permits to work could apply in organisation and would need consideration before any work activity commences.
There are many hazards and risk associated with the use of MEWP’s and working at height therefore ensure Managers and staff are aware of the precautions, preventions and the emergency procedures before work commences.
