(i&G – Managing Forklift Operators)
- Employers must provide adequate information, instructions and training to ensure the Health and Safety of employees.
- Employers are required to perform a suitable and sufficient risk assessment.
- Publications relating to the safe use of lifting equipment include: PUWER & LOLER.
- A thorough examination must be carried out on all lifting equipment every 6 – 12 months.
- There are many types of Forklift Truck which have specific categories ranging from A1 PPT to B3 Counterbalanced forklift truck with a lifting capacity of over 15 tons.
- Operators are required to maintain a minimum traveling distance of 3 truck lengths.
- When travelling up inclines (laden) the forks of a forklift truck must be facing uphill.
- Safe parking of a forklift truck requires the forks to be in the tilted forward position with the fork tips touching the floor and the keys removed.
- Personnel cages can only be used in an unplanned event (reference HSE PM28).
- Operators must understand how to read the Rated Capacity Plates situated on FLT’s.
- Pre-operational safety checks must be carried out and evidence recorded.
- The handbrake must be applied and neutral selected when using hydraulic controls.
- Adding an attachment to a forklift truck requires the operator to receive further training.
- Pallet racking systems must be inspected and UDL limits indicated.
- Rated Capacity Plates provide 3 pieces of information, 1: Trucks Capacity, 2: Load Centre, 3: Machine Lifting Height. Operators must understand how to de-rate the capacity for an increased load centre.
